The excellent reference, High-Speed Flight Propulsion Systems edited by Murthy and Curran, is available on Google Books. Although the copyright date is 1991, the information still very valid. Air-breathing engines have a lot to recommend them in terms of high Isp. Of particular interest is a section on the Ducted-Rocket Cycle, starting around p. 71. The variable-equivalence ratio ducted rocket/scram-jet seems me very attractive in terms of flight envelope and simplicity.
