Mining activities on asteroids (Specifically the removal of mass) will cause changes in the orbit of the asteroid being mined. Mining the NEO's could greatly reduce the chances of an impact from an asteroid if it is done RIGHT.
The next problem comes from something disturbed from the main asteroid belt and those darn comets.

The benefit of course being. The more we get into space the more objects we will know. Detection of an hazard will be earlier too.
Self preservation. Mining materials. Adventure. It is all there for the taking.

I would add : this is best option from all others such as blasting, deflecting showned by movies......
